Microsoft updates Xbox app for Windows 11 with compact mode for better handheld usability
Microsoft is updating its Xbox App on Windows 11 to make it more suitable for handheld devices and smaller screens. The update includes a new feature called compact mode which minimizes the left-hand sidebar, improving usability on devices like the ROG Ally with a 7-inch display. This is particularly important as Windows 11 can often appear cluttered on smaller devices, which has been the main downside of these devices so far.
The company has revealed early concepts of a "Windows handheld mode" a few months ago during a Microsoft hackathon project, featuring a floating taskbar, an improved game launcher, and changes to the Xbox app.
Microsoft seems now to be focusing on improving the Xbox and Xbox Game Pass experience on devices like the Ally, and is considering new features like Quick Resume for Windows gamers. The company is also working with publishers to enhance the gaming experience across different devices.
