Apple rolls out iOS 17.1 update: new features, improvements, and how to install
Apple has released iOS 17.1, the next update of its mobile operating system, just a little over a month after launching the new major version, iOS 17. The upgrade, which was beta tested for a month, introduces several new features and improvements.
Key enhancements include the ability for AirDrop transfers to continue via cellular connection when out of Wi-Fi range. A new Favorites feature in Apple Music allows users to add songs, albums, playlists, and artists to their library, improving the music recommendation algorithm, as well as the ability to set new custom covers for playlists and suggestion whenever you add a new song. There are also new adjustments to the StandBy feature settings offer better control over the phone's display in smart display mode, and for UK users, the Apple Wallet app now enables bank balance checks due to Open Banking API integration. The Apple Watch in its new version watchOS 10.1 also receives support for NameDrop, allowing users to exchange contact information seamlessly between the iPhone and their Watch.
iOS 17.1 also comes with various bug fixes, including improved synchronization of Screen Time settings across multiple devices, enhanced privacy control by fixing a bug that could reset the Significant Location setting when transferring or pairing an Apple Watch, and the resolution of an issue where custom and purchased ringtones might not appear as options. Keyboard responsiveness has been improved, and a problem causing persistent display images has been rectified.
To install the update, users should go to Settings General Software Update and follow the instructions. The update may not be immediately available to everyone, but a notification icon in the Settings app will indicate when it's ready for download.
