Secure mail and VPN provider Proton has announced that its raised subscription fees will only apply to new customers following the switch.

Existing subscribers to Proton services will not have to pay the increased service fees. These rate increases complement a newly uniform brand identity that will be accessible from the URL [proton.me](https://proton.me/). Existing users will retain their existing email addresses, and [protonvpn.com](https://protonvpn.com) will still be used for the VPN as of this writing, but this will change in the future too.

Though Proton plans to launch its rate increase this week, the precise prices have not been disclosed. Current subscribers will retain their current rates for as long as they continue to renew.

It's important to note that the browser extension is only available to premium users and not to those using the free version. Although it only encrypts the browser's internet connection, the extension offers additional features like Secure Core, auto-connect, and split tunneling.

The browser extension is ideal for low-end devices that can't run a full VPN app or devices where you don't have admin rights to install the VPN app. It's compatible with Chromium-based and Firefox-based browsers, allowing users to connect to different VPN servers in various browsers, and each browser can connect to a different VPN server.

Proton VPN launches secure and convenient browser extension for Premium users

ProtonVPN's development team is claiming that Apple is rejecting updates to the iOS version of the app in direct response to the currently unfolding humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. 

In [a post](https://protonvpn.com/blog/apple-blocks-app-updates/) on the official [Proton VPN](/software/protonvpn/) blog, founder Andy Yen shared an email from Apple showing that it declined the VPN software's latest security update on the App Store due to its description encouraging users to circumvent georestrictions. Yen states that this description has been used and unchanged for months without issue.

[On Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/mbdi70/apple_blocked_protonvpn_security_updates_last/), users have criticized Yen's statement, saying that simply changing the description so people in Myanmar can continue to use ProtonVPN as its needed. In response, Yen commented:

"Why are we complaining about this? It's true we can edit the description (and we have, as we have no choice), but what does Proton stand for, if not for bringing online freedom to people around the world, and challenging authoritarian governments?

We stand against this not because it is convenient or easy, but because it is a matter of core principles. If we don't call out violations of these principles, then we don't stand for anything.

For those defending Apple here, our stance is really no different than Apple challenging governments by defying the FBIs demands for a backdoor. Apple did not quietly agree to that, and similarly, Proton will not quietly agree to something that is a violation of our principles."

Other users have commented that this is strictly Apple adhering to its own guidelines, though the timing when the description has been unchanged can be considered important. It could, however, simply be ProtonVPN's increased usage in the wake of the Myanmar crisis.
