After 5 years of work, PeerTube v5 is now available
Yesterday, the popular education social network from France, Framasoft, has released the version 5 of its video platform called PeerTube. The project, which was created in 2017 to be a free, decentralized, and federated alternative to YouTube, has grown and matured, and is now used by hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
Since the beginning of 2022, Framasoft has been working on making PeerTube easier to use for video makers and their communities, bringing, among others, several enhancements to the interface, a built-in video editor for small edits, and the ability to auto-import videos from YouTube.
With this new release, emphasis was placed on the following points:
- A redesigned file system to secure internal and private videos
- The possibility of storing live streams in the cloud
- The use of two-factor authentication for increased security
- An improved API, so that PeerTube contributors can develop more powerful plugins
…as well as some UI changes, bug fixes, and improvements.
This tool has been growing for the past 5 years, and it seems the team behind it still has some interesting plans for the years to come.
Framasoft is currently having an AMA on Reddit, so feel free to ask them questions if you have some. You can also submit ideas on their “Let's improve PeerTube!” website, if you want to help.
