Mozilla acquires Pocket developers Read It Later, Inc
In its first strategic acquisition, Mozilla is gaining the mobile reach of leading save-for-later service Pocket. Known previously as Read It Later, Pocket has more than 10 million active monthly users bookmarking content to view later. The new subsidiary will continue operations as usual with with founder Nate Weiner at the helm, and with the benefit of Mozilla's rich technological history and resources.
The purchase is for an undisclosed sum and brings to mind last year's acquisition of similar save-for-later app Instapaper by Pinterest . Both represent an extension of the purchasing company's brand through popular bookmarking apps.
Good news for open source fans, according to Mozilla's chief business and legal officer Denelle Dixon-Thayer, Pocket eventually "will become part of the Mozilla open source project."
