Family Tree | Sites & programs

I do not recommend using websites or online programs to create a family tree, as it usually costs money, and the free version is often very limited and there are security issues.

Well, then what are the alternatives?

  1. I think this is the best program for beginners. It's free (and has no limits on the number of people in the family tree), offline and safe, has GEDCOM support, and has a good design. The only disappointing thing is that this program is not available on Linux and Mac.

Alternative to Agelong Tree icon Agelong Tree - it's offline, has GEDCOM support, but its freemium (without buying a license you cant enter more than 40 persons), and only for Win & Mac. Generations Tree icon Generations Tree - it's offline, but has no GEDCOM support, freemium (without buying a license you cant enter more than 20 persons & other things), and only for Win & Android MacFamilyTree icon MacFamilyTree - I haven't tried this program, but I like the way it looks. It is probably the most beautiful program for creating a family tree (and i wish other programs have this simple, intuitive & beautiful design, and virtual globe :) ). So it's good looking program, offline, has GEDCOM support. But its not free & costs 35$ (or 70$ without discount) and only for Apple devices.

  2. Gramps icon
     Like
    • it's offline
    • it's safe
    • it's multiplatform
    • it's free
    • it's very customizable, very flexible
    • Easy report creation & can even create websites

But I can't recommend it to beginners.

So Gramps is the best option, but only when you are seriously engaged in genealogy.
