I'm sure this is a lovely productivity tool, however it's too much for me in my quest to find a good pocket replacement.

The UI is too much, there is so many things happening everywhere and tbf it's offering a lot of productivity funtionality that I simply do not need for my usecase

BRILLIANT! Indexes all visited websites and bookmarking with the sidebar is blazing fast. Just type "m" and then "t" to set tags or "m" and then "b" for staring. open-source, local-storage, many filters available, hotkeys … search for any word on every website you've visited, if you've seen it, you can find it!

AND it's free (for local manual backups)! just $12 a year for Cloud backup

It is a good software, but they are changing the license of the project. The developers have been very very quite about the change in the license modifications:

I suggest being very cautious about your data as considering their $150 price tag, they might also start locking your data into their platform (they would not be the first project to do this). Use it, donate, but be cautious.

That's it! I think Alternative To needs to review Memex category as "Open Source".

I discovered it looking for FOSS alternatives to the Readwise (books highlights) and was also to replace Pocket.

However, when testing the extension for Firefox, on Youtube video notes (Okay, Youtube is not FOSS ...), I realized that there is an integration with ChatGPT (a proprietary software).

To make matters worse, when opening the sidebar of the extension, a video summary is already created (automatically)... That is, the ChatGPT is already activated! I think it's important to know that. It's a shame, because I really liked the tool and now I don't know if I will continue using it.

For those who want to read more about the licensing issues, follow the issue 1229 on their github page (link below) and also try to find the LICENSE file in their code.

I'm not saying this is a bad software. What I'm saying is that changing from MIT license to no license without any explanation and avoiding this burning question since 2022-02-04 on their github issues is concerning.

Users in general should be careful about vendor-locking, build reproducibility (which has been reported that memex is now suffering), and licensing.

I started using this years ago when it was open source, but the service abruptly closed source and has changed focus multiple times, adding proprietary features. Overall the owners just don't seem to place enough care in the trust their existing users give them, or in how their data is managed. I suspect this company will fold given that they're now jumping into the AI hype.

They have been very open about most changes (after those changes are made - https://community.memex.garden/t/is-memex-going-closed-source/1492), especially in their struggle to find financial security and a fair business model, but they don't seem to understand that the type of data this system captures should never be anything but E2EE. Even if users trust them to never read, use, or sell their data, a hack/leak is practically guaranteed on a long enough timeline, so it's best to architect systems where nobody has access to that data except the user(s) who own that data.

There are too many bugs currently. It has great potential, but bugs like unable to batch delete bookmarks or unable to delete an account etc. need to be solved!

It looks more like a social blogging site than a bookmark storage site. Has it changed? "Learn the basics about saving and searching what you read online" link was broken. When I have to watch videos to learn how to save a link, it makes me want to look elsewhere.
