What is VCV Rack?
VCV Rack is a modular synthesizer inspired by Eurorack systems. It acts a host for virtual modules which perform various audio processes. E.G. oscillators, filters, envelope generators, sequencers and more that can be connected freely in almost limitless combinations. It is currently in beta, but fully functional and actively developed. It also has a thriving community of 3rd party developers who produce a wide variety of plug-in modules.

a great modular enviroment.
The free version is open source, but the paid one is not. The plugin version of VCV Rack is paid and not open source. Even though the free version is open source, you can't commit any changes. If you don't like that the plugin version costs and is not open source, that the program connects to a server, or that you can't commit any changes, take a look at Cardinal by DISTRHO.
I would say the base programm is open source, but not all rack modules are open source. Great thing about the paid version is that it can run as VST / AU / ... in other DAW's
Very Good VST and It's free
Probably the best sounding modular synth on the free market. In many cases, it sounds exactly like the Eurorack hardware it was made to emulate.

The GUI is perfect. The randomize tool is great for inspiration. The essentials are all free while access to more custom premium modules is just a click away. Beautiful all around.
