Unfiltered.news lets you see the news the world is talking about through an intuitive map that you can pan and zoom around to find trending topics.

Every day, tens of thousands of publishers report the news world wide. Unfiltered News allows you to explore Google News data across all publishing languages and locations to find important global stories and perspectives that may not be covered in your location. Discover which locations report on similar topics, compare different perspectives on an issue, and track issue coverage over time.

The data comes from Google News. We scan global news stories for individual topics across all languages, then count the number of times that a topic is mentioned each day, categorized by the location of the publication mentioning that topic. The result is a cross-lingual signal for who is saying what in the world’s media. At this time only the top 100 topics for each location are shown.

HOW TO USE

• To navigate the map you can zoom and drag to discover new topics.
• Click on a circle to to select that location.
• When you find a topic you are interested in, you can click on the word on the map to see more information about that topic. You can also search for a topic in the search bar.
• Use the timeline to view news on a specific date. You can also view trends of various topics over time.
• On the topic view, you can explore a collection of headlines by location. Scroll through the headline list to see headlines sorted by location.
• View the same Unfiltered News content on a list instead of a map. Use the settings menu to select this view.

UNDERSTANDING THE VISUALIZATION

Word Size - The size of a word represents the number of times that a topic has been mentioned in the days news within a given location. Circle Size - The size of a given circle is determined by the total number of topic mentions from publishers located in a given location, weighted by the population of that location.
