TalkType information
What is TalkType?
TalkType is a free, open-source speech-to-text app for Linux. It runs entirely offline using OpenAI's Whisper model — your voice never leaves your computer. Just press a hotkey, talk, and your words appear wherever your cursor is.
It works on GNOME, KDE, and other Linux desktops, with full Wayland support. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, TalkType can use GPU acceleration for faster transcription. It comes as a single AppImage — no installation needed.
Features include customizable voice commands, automatic punctuation, multiple Whisper model sizes, a GNOME shell extension for easy access, and built-in preferences for microphone testing and configuration.
Built by a hobbyist developer and completely free. Feedback and suggestions welcome on GitHub Discussions.
