I think Symfony is the best framework to develop complete and maintainable applications over the years in PHP.
To me, it's excellent because it suggests a (good) way of doing things but also supports a lot of different ways to build an application. This is why you can start from the bottom and continue building the application even when the project becomes vast.
It's the best PHP framework so far
General research I've done on the topic and research indicates Symfony2 is better for scaling large PHP applications, but Laravel is easier to get started as a framework (plus more learning tutorials)
