StartEd's GUI is very clear .... what it is about. I have always had problems with other boot-startup apps because of my own ignorance. Of the previous managers I have tried, I erred on the side of caution, and didn't poke-the-bear.

StartEd has made boot-startup "tweaking" a lot easier and safer. Tweaking Services has always been my main concern, so I have kept a record of all "Services" tweaks. Maybe the PRO version would reduce my anxiety over stuff-ups, with backups of services and apps.

I really like the colorcoding of each item ... made simple by the "colors" index on the GUI. And if you try to disable anything you should not ... StartEd shows an alert-message.

There are two editions ... both installers only , no portable versions. Lite is free PRO is $19 usd

The only difference is Lite does not include "backups" of startup settings. So far I am pleased with StartEd Lite's simplicity. Last updates for both Pro & Lite was Jul-2016. Developers home page states OS ... Win-XP/Vista/7/8/10

I would have preferred PORTABLE version ... but it is what it is.

What is StartEd?

StartEd is a utility that helps you to manage the Windows startup procedure. It recognizes obsolete or memory-hogging startup programs, and lets you safely disable them to increase your computer's performance. You can uninstall startup programs directly from StartEd.

StartEd also detects Trojan Horses, the most destructive and dangerous species of computer virus, and allows you to backup and restore your startup configurations.

StartEd displays detailed info about the functionality of every system service so that even novice users can manage their startup configurations. A warning message is displayed if a system service vital for the computer's stability is about to get disabled.

What is a System Service?

A Windows System Service is a program that performs specific functions without user intervention. It can be configured to start when the operating system is booted (Startup Type = Automatic) and run in the background, or it can be configured to start on demand when required (Startup Type = Manual). Many services are DLL (Dynamic Link Libraries) files that are loaded into memory by the svchost.exe application.
