What is Simple SMS Messenger?
A great way to stay in touch with your relatives, by sending both SMS and MMS messages. The app properly handles group messaging too, just like blocking numbers from Android 7+.
It offers many date formats to choose from, to make you feel comfortable at using it. You can toggle between 12 and 24 hours time format too.
It has a really tiny app size compared to the competition, making it really fast to download
It comes with material design and dark theme by default, provides great user experience for easy usage. The lack of internet access gives you more privacy, security and stability than other apps.
Contains ads and is no longer open source, contrary to previous state, as of February 2024.

The last maintained open-source SMS app (QKSMS and Silence are dead).
Was sold to zipoapps, not free anymore. Contains plenty of ads in free version and a expensive pro version.
I like it and its simplicity. Would be nice if timed message deletion was available, but whatevs. I've only had four issues so far, with a solution for one and another I haven't encountered yet.
Per Issue #584 (Sending a message in group conversation also sends it to every participant individually.) on GitHub, the fix is to enable "Send group messages as MMS" in the settings.
Per Issue #486 (Image Won't Open) on GitHub, the fix for images opening to a black screen on GrapheneOS is to install Simple Gallery. Haven't tested an alternative app myself and don't plan to. 🤷🏿♂️
Either Signal's export failed to include all of my SMS/MMS messages or Simple SMS failed to import them. I noticed two previously sent messages missing from a conversation. 🤷🏿♂️
A set of group messages I imported from Signal aren't appearing in the list, but do when I search for the participants. 🤷🏿♂️
Seems like auto-messages are the only ones that get displayed slightly out of order when viewing the list. 🤷🏿♂️
