What is Simple Scan?
Simple Scan is an easy-to-use application, designed to let users connect their scanner and quickly have the image/document in an appropriate format.
It's very simple, there are no advanced features, but it works well for everyday scans. It can save in PDF, JPG or PNG format.
Simple Scan is basically a frontend for SANE - which is the same backend as XSANE uses. This means that all existing scanners will work and the interface is well tested.

Comments and Reviews
I really love this app!
Simple Scan appear to have been renamed "Document Scanner" in newer Ubuntu repositories (as of 2022). It is painfully slow and provides no way to specify the dimensions of its output, which is limited to the options text and image. Rudimentary to say the least!
The UI is rather fiddly when repeatedly changing DPI settings or flatbed/feeder settings. There's no caution prompt so accidentally closing the program will wipe any unsaved scans.
I just tried it for the first time to scan some tax documents. It worked perfectly, with no setup and no errors.
I can even see and rotate the image as it scans, stop when I have what I need, crop what I want, and save large groups of images at the same time with simple pic-1,pic-2,pic-3 naming conventions.
Couldn't ask for better for a quick scan.
When I got hold of a printer with scanning abilities I was really surprised how well done this little app is. Truly a 1-Click utility, praise the dev!
