What is openKylin?

openKylin community is an open source community founded by basic software and hardware enterprises, non-profit organizations, community organizations, colleges and universities, scientific research institutions and individual developers on the basis of open source, voluntariness, equality and cooperation. It is committed to building an open source community of desktop operating system through open source and open community cooperation and promoting the prosperity and development of Linux open source technology and its software and hardware ecology.

openKylin is a Chinese desktop distribution which runs the Kylin and UKUI desktop environments. Both Wayland and X11 sessions are available out of the box. The project is a member of the Debian family and can use APT package management tools. It also features a custom package format which is combined with a software centre. openKylin is also a proving ground for custom utilities which assist the user in managing the operating system.

openKylin is a community-led, open-source desktop operating system initiated under the OpenAtom Foundation. It aims to establish a root community for desktop Linux in China, promoting innovation through open collaboration among global developers, enterprises, and institutions.

Unlike commercial distributions, openKylin is driven purely by open-source values — transparency, meritocracy, and shared ownership. It features a modern, user-friendly desktop environment (UKUI), supports mainstream hardware architectures (including x86_64 and ARM64), and is optimized for daily productivity, development, and education scenarios.

The project welcomes global contributors to co-build a neutral, vendor-free foundation for the future of open desktop computing.
