What is OpenFields?

OpenFields is a modern, free, and open-source alternative to ACF (Advanced Custom Fields) for WordPress. It’s built to give you the full power of custom fields without paywalls, pro upgrades, or locked features. Everything is included from the start, and the interface feels fast and modern thanks to a React + Tailwind admin UI.

You get all the essential field types—text, textarea, number, email, URL, WYSIWYG editor, image, gallery, file, select, radio, checkbox, switch, date, datetime, time, color, link, post object, taxonomy, user, repeater, and group. More will be added over time, and every feature stays completely free under GPL.

Developers will feel at home instantly because OpenFields uses the same familiar ACF-style API. Functions like get_field(), have_rows(), the_row(), and get_sub_field() work as expected, so switching from ACF is painless and doesn’t require major code changes. It also includes REST API support for headless setups or custom dashboards.

Installation is simple: download the latest release from GitHub and upload it to your WordPress site, or clone the repo directly into wp-content/plugins. The plugin is built with clean PHP, modern TypeScript, and a structure that follows WordPress guidelines, making it stable and easy to extend.

OpenFields is fully open source, community-driven, and designed for people who want modern custom fields without subscriptions or limitations. It’s a complete, forever-free solution for building structured content in WordPress.
