What is Jan.ai?
Jan.ai is an open-source alternative to ChatGPT that operates entirely offline on a user's computer. This software allows users to download and run Local AI Models (LLMs) such as Llama, Gemma, Qwen, GPT-oss and others from HuggingFace. It also features cloud integration, enabling users to connect to GPT models via OpenAI and Claude models through Anthropic, Mistral, Groq, and more.
In addition to this, Jan.ai offers the ability to create custom AI assistants tailored to specific tasks. It comes with an OpenAI-compatible API, which allows local server access at localhost:1337 for other applications. The software also incorporates Model Context Protocol (MCP) for agentic capabilities. With a strong emphasis on privacy, Jan.ai ensures that all operations can run locally at the user's discretion.
Jan.ai is designed to run on any hardware. It supports universal architectures, which range from personal computers to multi-GPU clusters. This includes NVIDIA GPUs and Apple M-series for fast processing, as well as Apple Intel, Linux Debian, and Windows x64.

Download for Windows is 390 MB. Won't install due to difficulty in writing to bun.exe. I probably need to redo my java program.
It runs fast thanks to good hardware support, and the GUI is well-designed. There is an experimental RAG feature, but it's not functioning properly at the moment. It also offers some settings that allow you to adjust the model parameters.
Pros: Clean design.
Cons: Heavy weight. Response regeneration sometimes causes errors. Impossible to switch between answers.
