How HotPads Started

HotPads started in 2005 in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington DC. Three college friends - Matt, Douglas, and John - were trying to find a place to live but had little luck. The experience was so frustrating that they pooled their collective resources and realized they could build a unique rentals marketplace with the first ever map-based search. Out of that, HotPads was born.

Where Is HotPads Today?

The HotPads team moved to San Francisco in 2011 to be closer to the hub of the technology world, and in late 2012, HotPads was acquired by Zillow Group. We are currently located in the sunny Financial District, based in the Zillow San Francisco offices. As of February 2015, we are 47 people strong.

At HotPads we believe you should love where you live. We also know that finding that perfect apartment can be difficult and stressful. We're here to ease the pain of looking for your next apartment by helping renters make smarter decisions about where to live and what neighborhoods to live in.
