What is FinFam?
FinFam is a collaborative financial planning platform that gives friends and families a way to work together on financial plans, with optional input from experts and AI assistance.
The platform operates on a two-sided marketplace model where financial advisors and experts create interactive "Views" - essentially sophisticated financial calculators and planning tools built using familiar spreadsheet formats (XLSX files that can be edited in Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice). These Views cover common financial decisions like rent vs. buy analysis, retirement planning, family budgeting, and investment scenarios. Creators can open-source their views for greater transparency and reliability.
Users can browse the View marketplace to find relevant planning tools, input their own financial data into private collaborative "Spaces," and discuss scenarios with their trusted circle. All financial information remains private by default but can be shared selectively. The platform includes an AI assistant named Finn that provides contextual guidance and explanations throughout the planning process.
Key features include:
- Collaborative planning spaces that can remain private, be shared with selected people, or made public
- Expert marketplace where financial professionals sell interactive planning tools without requiring ongoing client relationships
- Version control and forking for financial models, allowing users to adapt and improve existing Views
- AI-powered Q&A that provides explanations and guidance based on users' specific financial context
- Community Q&A board for peer-to-peer financial discussions when existing Views don't address specific situations
- No account linking required - users input data manually rather than connecting bank accounts
FinFam targets younger generations (Millenials, Gen Z) who prefer collaborative, transparent approaches to financial planning. The platform addresses the trust paradox in financial advice by enabling trusted personal relationships to leverage expert knowledge without the traditional commitments and costs of financial advisory services.
Built as a web application, the platform emphasizes transparency, collaborative decision-making, and making expert financial guidance accessible without the traditional barriers of cost, commitment, or complex onboarding processes.
