What is Brave Translate?
Brave Translate is a cutting-edge translation feature incorporated into the Brave web browser, designed to provide fast, accurate, and privacy-respecting translations of web pages. This in-built feature results from a strategic partnership between Brave and Lingvanex, allowing users to seamlessly translate content into 108 different languages.
Key Features:
-
Ease of Use: Brave Translate is integrated directly into the browser's address bar. When you navigate to a website with content in a foreign language, a prompt will appear, allowing you to translate the page instantly.
-
Privacy-Centric: In line with Brave's focus on privacy, all translation requests have their IP addresses removed, and any text submitted for translation is not stored after the request is complete.
-
Extension Compatibility: While Brave Translate is the default, users can still use other translation extensions. However, enabling another extension will override the built-in feature.
-
User Control: Through the settings page (brave://settings/languages), you can customize your preferred languages and even opt to have the browser offer translations for web pages in those languages.
-
Advanced Options: Users are given multiple choices like "Always Translate," "Never Translate," and more, to customize their translation experience on a per-language or per-website basis.
-
Context Menu Translation: Right-clicking on the page gives the option to translate the page via the context menu, providing another convenient way to initiate translations.
-
High-Quality Translations: The partnership with Lingvanex ensures the translations are quick and accurate, covering a wide range of languages worldwide.

Comments and Reviews
Brave Translate is not fully open-source as it relies on Lingvanex, a proprietary third-party engine, for translations. While Brave claims to strip IP addresses before sending text to their servers and Lingvanex for processing, the text itself is still shared temporarily with these servers. This means that sensitive content may be exposed, even though Brave asserts that no data is retained after the translation request is completed. For privacy-conscious users, this setup provides slightly better privacy than Google Translate but falls short compared to Firefox Translate, which performs all translations locally on the user’s device, without sending any data to Mozilla servers or proprietary third-party. Brave Translate does not offer the same level of privacy as Firefox Translate. Brave’s server-side approach may also result in slower performance, as some users have reported. A fully local translation option, like Firefox’s, would be a significant improvement for privacy-focused users.
