Battlesnake is a wonderful place to practise building an API that receives and responds to HTTP requests. One of the greatest benefits is the level of freedom and low barrier of entry. There are no restrictions on which programming language you use, so long as it can handle HTTP requests, and you do not need to be an expert in algorithms or machine learning to get started!
Additionally, the Battlesnake community is fantastic - there are many friendly people who are happy to answer questions and help you develop your snake and your skills. Competitions remain casual and in good sport, and everyone encourages each other to succeed.
