Basecut information
What is Basecut?
Basecut is a CLI-first tool that gives every developer on your team production-like data without compliance risk.
Your production database has the data your team needs to build and debug — but it's full of PII, it's too large to copy whole, and handing it to developers is a compliance incident waiting to happen. So teams compromise: a shared staging database everyone steps on, a months-old dump in S3 nobody trusts, or seed scripts that broke two migrations ago.
With Basecut, one command extracts a referentially valid subset of your PostgreSQL database by following foreign key relationships. It auto-detects and deterministically anonymizes PII using 30+ strategies — emails, names, phone numbers, SSNs, credit cards, IBANs — and replaces them with realistic fakes. The result is a versioned snapshot any teammate can restore locally in seconds.
Key capabilities:
- FK-aware extraction with zero broken references
- 30+ auto-detection anonymization strategies
- Deterministic masking that preserves cross-table relationships
- Org-wide snapshot policies (Team plan)
- Data stays in your infrastructure — CLI runs locally, agent runs in your VPC
- YAML-based configuration generated from your schema
- PostgreSQL 12–17 support
Free for up to 3 developers with 20 snapshots/month. Team plan at $99/month adds unlimited snapshots, VPC agent execution, and policy enforcement.
