What is Anycast?

Anycast for AWS will leverage multiple AWS regions and transit provider connections to globally load balance internet traffic, maximize availability and create fast failover, while maintaining IP addresses and keeping sessions alive. It operates at BGP-level and assigns a single global IP address to a company. This IP address never changes during a server request and thus the time for redirecting reduces from 5 minutes to several seconds. There a two use cases:

  1. Failover - If the nearest server fails, data traffic will be redirected to the next available server.
  2. Load Balancer – If the access of many IP addresses to a server oversteps a maximum load, data traffic will be redirected and evenly distributed to all the other available servers.
