Fuzzy file finder Cling 2.0 debuts with rewritten search engine, new filters and CLI tools
Cling 2.0 has been released as the latest version of this macOS utility for instant fuzzy file search. Its search engine has been completely rebuilt to run natively, no longer relying on external tools. The new file-path-specific fuzzy search index delivers more relevant results than previous approaches and searches across millions of files in less than 100 milliseconds. Leveraging all available CPU cores and Single Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD) acceleration, Cling now loads persistent binary indexes instantly when launched.
Building on these core changes, live file system tracking has become faster and more reliable. Users will notice improved quick filters with support for new fields, such as filtering by .pdf and .docx extensions, searching only folders, and automatic query modifications. Additionally, extension queries make it possible to search by both keywords and file type directly from the input field.
Following these upgrades, users can now navigate search history using the arrow keys and take advantage of tab-based autocompletion. Recently changed files are immediately visible on opening Cling, and a real-time list of file system and index changes is available. Additional options include a command-line interface for terminal searches, hotkey integration to move files to apps like Yoink, a new optional Liquid Glass theme with alternative options, tracking files involved in recent actions, and expanded controls on script execution.
