Amazon will cut off support and Kindle Store access for older Kindle devices in May 2026

Amazon has announced that effective May 20th, 2026, Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets released in 2012 or earlier will lose access to the Kindle Store. This change means users will not be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content on these older devices. While this affects all Kindle models released from the original 2007 keyboard model through the first-generation Kindle Paperwhite and early Kindle Fire tablets from 2011 and 2012, users can continue reading content they have already downloaded.

Following this update, if a user deregisters or factory-resets an affected device after the cut-off date, it will not be possible to register it again. However, current books and existing downloads will remain accessible. For Kindle Fire owners, only book-related features are impacted. Other Amazon services and apps will continue working on these older tablets despite the change.

To assist longtime users, Amazon plans to notify those affected by email before May 2026, explaining both the limitations and the options available. As an incentive for those wishing to upgrade, Amazon will be offering a 20% discount on new Kindle hardware and a $20 ebook credit, both valid through June 20th, 2026.
