Tails 7.6 adds automatic Tor bridges, replaces KeePassXC with GNOME Secrets, and more
Tails 7.6 has been released as the latest version of this portable operating system, which prioritizes privacy and counters censorship. This update introduces enhanced guidance and options for Tor bridges, available directly from the Tor Connection assistant. Users can now automatically connect to Tor, and if access is blocked, a new option asks for a Tor bridge based on their region. Tails gathers suitable bridge data using the Tor Project’s Moat API, with the connection disguised for censorship circumvention via domain fronting.
Following these privacy improvements, Tails now replaces KeePassXC with the GNOME Secrets password manager. This change brings a simplified interface and better GNOME desktop integration, with accessibility features like the on-screen keyboard and adjustable cursor size restored. GNOME Secrets can unlock existing KeePassXC databases and supports fallback to KeePassXC for advanced needs.
Building on these enhancements, Tails 7.6 updates several bundled programs, including Electrum 4.7.0, Tor Browser 15.0.8, and Thunderbird 140.8.0, as well as updated firmware packages. The release also addresses several bugs, improving overall stability and usability.
