Signal introduces group member labels, allowing you to specify your role or responsibility

Signal has introduced group member labels in its latest updates, now available on Android, desktop, and iOS. This feature allows users to add a label next to their profile name within group chats. Labels can clarify each person’s responsibilities or serve as an inside joke unique to the group.

Building on Signal’s privacy commitment, these group member labels are end-to-end encrypted and only visible within the specific groups where they are set. Unlike assigning admin status, creating a label provides no special permissions, it is intended only as a descriptive tool for other members to see. Users can set different labels for every group chat they join, allowing for a personalized approach based on context.

After enabling this feature, every group member can create a label for themselves, but not for others. However, admins have the option to restrict label creation to only admin members, and turning off this permission results in the removal of non-admin labels from the group.
