OpenAI's AI coding app Codex launches on Windows with multi-agent management & sandboxing
OpenAI has released a native Codex application for Windows, giving developers a new tool to manage coding agents and automate their workflows directly in the Windows environment. This release enables users to oversee multiple agents simultaneously and perform automation tasks without needing to switch to Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) or virtual machines.
Building on this functionality, the Windows Codex app introduces an agent sandboxing feature that leverages operating system-level mechanisms. It uses restricted tokens, filesystem access controls, and dedicated sandbox users, allowing agents to run securely within real developer environments like PowerShell.
Users now have the ability to manage agents in parallel, oversee long-running automation tasks, and review code differences in a single interface while remaining within their established Windows setup. These improvements are designed to streamline coding activities and make advanced automation more accessible to Windows developers.
The introduction of the Windows application comes one month after OpenAI's launch of the dedicated Codex desktop app for macOS, signaling a continued focus on expanding Codex availability across major developer platforms.
