Kali Linux 2026.1 launches with Linux 6.18, theme update, BackTrack mode, and 8 new tools

Kali Linux 2026.1 is now available, bringing an updated experience for users focused on digital forensics, security research, and penetration testing. Among this release’s highlights is a full theme refresh, continuing the distribution’s tradition of modernizing the interface annually. This overhaul updates the boot menu, installer, login display, and supplies a fresh collection of desktop wallpapers.

In recognition of the 20th anniversary of its predecessor, BackTrack Linux, Kali Linux introduces a BackTrack mode in kali-undercover. With a single switch, users can replicate the appearance of BackTrack 5, complete with original wallpaper, color scheme, and window themes, appealing especially to long-time and nostalgic users.

Powered by the Linux 6.18 kernel, this release also delivers 8 new security tools: AdaptixC2, which focuses on post-exploitation and adversarial emulation; Atomic-Operator for running Atomic Red Team tests; Fluxion for security auditing and social-engineering; GEF for an enhanced GDB debugging experience; MetasploitMCP, SSTImap, WPProbe, and XSStrike to expand penetration testing workflows.

For those relying on software defined radio tools through the kali-tools-sdr metapackage, it should be noted the GNU Radio ecosystem in this release is unstable, with gr-air-modes and gqrx-sdr currently not functioning. Finally, the Kali NetHunter application receives targeted bug fixes covering WPS scanning, HID permission verification, and navigation via the back button.
