HandBrake 1.11 adds MOV encoding, ProRes & DNxHR presets, new AV1 4K support, and more

HandBrake 1.11 has been released as the latest version of this free and open-source transcoder for digital video files. This update introduces encoding to the MOV container format, allowing users to target professional workflows that rely on this widely used standard. Building on this, new production presets are available for DNxHR and ProRes, both supporting MOV containers. These presets enable encoding at various resolutions, including proxy settings at 2160p, 1080p, and 540p, and offer 24-bit PCM multi-channel audio with support for passthrough workflows.

The update advances archival capabilities through expanded Preservation FFV1 presets. Users can now encode FFV1 video with FLAC or PCM audio, and pass through codecs like Apple Lossless, PCM, and Vorbis when preserving source characteristics. On the video encoding front, HandBrake 1.11 adds dedicated DNxHR and ProRes encoders, as well as an AMD VCN AV1 10-bit encoder and MPEG-2 profile and level selection. Users with AMD 9000 series GPUs benefit from a new AV1 VCN 2160p 4K preset, though caution is required on AMD 7000 series hardware where output dimensions may be inaccurate.

Following these changes, PCM encoding and passthrough are supported, alongside custom audio channel order selection. Users can mux FFV1 video into MP4 containers and take advantage of improved AV1 seeking on Apple software. Dolby Vision profile 5 video now gains accurate color tagging. HandBrake 1.11 also addresses non-zero first chapter timestamps and updates its platform builds and third-party libraries.
