GIMP 3.2 RC3 brings non-raster layers, new color operations, improved crop tool, and more
GIMP 3.2 RC3 has arrived with significant changes for users working with layered images. This release introduces new link and vector layer types, joining the existing text layers to broaden creative options. Following this, GIMP standardizes destructive actions across these non-raster layers, allowing users to more safely edit without unintentionally flattening their work. If you rasterize these layers and later change your mind, the process can now be reversed, restoring your original layer.
Building on these updates, color swatch functionality has been extended to vector layers. You can now drag a color or pattern swatch onto a vector layer to change its fill, paralleling the flexibility already available for text layers. In terms of color adjustment, mainstay filters like Levels, Curves, Equalize, and White Balance now operate in Linear precision by default, addressing past inconsistencies and providing consistent results both via the interface and in scripts.
These core enhancements are complemented by visual updates, including a new splash screen, improved crop, flip, and shear tools, and overall user interface improvements. GIMP 3.2 RC3 also expands file format compatibility, refines the macOS installer, enhances its API, and delivers assorted bug and security fixes.
