Canva now lets you convert static images into fully editable, multi-layered designs

Canva has launched Magic Layers, a new feature designed to convert static images into fully editable, multi-layered designs within the platform. This capability allows users to take previously finished, flat images and unlock structured editability, turning them into flexible starting points for additional creativity.

With Magic Layers, the AI model analyzes imported designs to detect and separate components. Text is restored as live, editable text boxes, while objects are identified and isolated, allowing users to move, modify, and animate individual elements. Backgrounds are also cleanly separated, ensuring content sits correctly in relation to other design parts.

Following the introduction of these detection and separation features, Magic Layers retains the original layout and spatial relationships from the imported image. This ensures that any design brought into Canva remains visually consistent and editable, rather than requiring a rebuild from scratch.

Building on this flexible foundation, users are able to reposition or resize elements, swap fonts, update colors, and rebalance layouts directly within their workspace. Magic Layers is now in public beta for users in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, with plans for global rollout in the near future.
