Google launches Developer Knowledge API and MCP server for direct documentation access

Google has opened the public preview for its Developer Knowledge API and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, giving developers and AI tools live, machine-readable access to official Google developer documentation.

Instead of relying on outdated training data or web-scraping, the Developer Knowledge API provides a programmatic source of truth. Developers can search and retrieve documentation in Markdown, streamlining integration with apps and workflows. Meanwhile, the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, based on an open standard, lets AI assistants and integrated development environments (IDEs) connect directly to Google’s documentation. This compatibility spans many popular AI tools and code editors.

These tools are available to all users and developers immediately as part of the public preview. While using the current feature set, developers can expect further improvements ahead. Google is planning to add support for structured content, such as code sample objects and API reference entities, broadening the type of data that can be accessed. The company also aims to expand the documentation corpus and reduce re-indexing latency, ensuring faster and more complete coverage as their platform evolves.
