TigerVNC 1.16 adds Wayland desktop sharing support, RHEL 10 packages, and new shortcuts
TigerVNC 1.16 is now available, delivering updates across its Virtual Network Computing server and client software. The release introduces a new keyboard shortcut system in the native viewer, replacing the F8 shortcut. This rework allows users to toggle full-screen mode more easily and redirect system keys for improved control.
Alongside this, the native viewer now supports sending and intercepting system keys in both windowed and full-screen sessions. On Windows, all system keys can be intercepted and forwarded. For macOS users, a new system key interception method is in place, which now requires explicit user approval for operation. Further usability improvements include a more responsive interface during remote session resizing and an enhanced server field with searchable history to streamline connection management.
A major addition is the w0vncserver, enabling screen sharing from Wayland desktops, a key step for distributions moving to the Wayland display protocol. In parallel, the Java viewer benefits from more precise scaling controls, allowing finer adjustment of session display.
On the packaging front, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 is newly supported, though without libvnc.so, while legacy support for Ubuntu 20.04 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 has been discontinued.
