Calibre 9.0 adds new bookshelf view, instant editing, Linux scrolling upgrades, and more

Calibre 9.0 arrives as the latest update to this free and open source ebook management software, delivering several enhancements for users managing digital libraries. This update’s centerpiece is the new bookshelf view, which visually arranges your book collection with spines displayed on virtual shelves.

In addition to the visual overhaul, the ebook viewer now includes an “Edit Book” button. This feature enables users to open the editor at the approximate location being viewed, provided the book is in an editable format such as EPUB, AZW3, or KEPUB.

Following these major improvements, Linux users benefit from momentum-based scrolling in the book list when using high resolution scroll devices like touchpads. For a smoother reading experience, users can also type a page number directly to navigate, eliminating the need to scroll through page lists.

For accessibility and international users, Calibre lets you replace images with their alt text attribute and adds support for cover images in non-conformant “Open Manga Format” EPUB files from some Japanese publishers. Building on customization options, Calibre now provides a setting to adjust the AI chat widget’s font size. Further updates include compatibility with the latest Kobo firmware and a range of bug fixes.
