Plex alerts users to reset their passwords following a new data breach
Plex has notified its users of a recent security incident that may have compromised account information. According to the official disclosure, an unauthorized third party accessed a limited subset of customer data, including emails, usernames, and hashed passwords. While the company has not revealed exactly how many accounts were affected or details about the attackers' methods, it confirms that the breach has been contained.
Following the incident, Plex is advising all users to reset their passwords and turn on two-factor authentication for extra account protection. The company emphasizes that all potentially exposed passwords were securely hashed, making them difficult for outsiders to read. However, Plex maintains that updating passwords is a key step in maintaining security standards for all users.
This breach follows a similar cyberattack in August 2022, when Plex users received nearly identical warnings and were also encouraged to change their passwords. The company’s current guidance mirrors previous advice given during that earlier event.
