Firefox for Android introduces encrypted DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) for enhanced protection

Mozilla is extending encrypted DNS protection to mobile users by introducing DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) support in Firefox for Android. This update builds on the browser’s prior rollout of DoH for desktop platforms. Following the release of Firefox 143 for Android, users can now enable DoH by selecting the new Increased Protection option within the app’s settings.

While Android users gain the ability to opt in immediately, Mozilla has indicated that DoH may be enabled by default for users in certain regions if performance metrics meet expectations, in line with the previous approach for desktop Firefox. These changes mean that Android users can proactively increase their privacy by opting in ahead of a possible future default switch.

Users can also turn DoH off entirely, select a preferred DNS resolver, or adjust the protection level according to their individual privacy preferences. For security reasons, Firefox enforces strict evaluation of DNS-over-HTTPS providers. Only those DNS providers who agree to Mozilla's Trusted Recursive Resolver (TRR) policy through a legally binding contract are permitted to operate within the web browser.
