IPFire brings WireGuard improvements and console graphics stack modernization
IPFire 2.29 Core Update 196 introduces a new Linux 6.12.34 kernel, bringing improved hardware compatibility, enhanced system performance, and updated security measures to this open-source firewall distribution.
Following the base system update, administrators can now view the status of active WireGuard virtual private network (VPN) connections directly from the IPFire web interface dashboard. This enhancement provides easier at-a-glance monitoring for VPN usage and status without additional navigation.
Building on these updates, the text console in IPFire has migrated to the Linux Direct Rendering Manager, replacing the previous framebuffer approach. The new DRM-based system improves compatibility with modern graphics hardware and enables the console to utilize higher resolutions, including Full HD and 4K, when supported. However, this console change only applies to new IPFire installations; existing installations retain the previous setup.
In addition to the core changes, IPFire 2.29 Core Update 196 delivers updated packages and a variety of other enhancements and bug fixes. These underlying improvements support stability and performance while maintaining the distribution’s security posture.
