Ubuntu Touch OTA-9 adds better VoLTE compatibility, Waydroid 1.5.1 support, new emoji font
UBports has published Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-9, now rolling out to compatible mobile devices. While the update features only a limited set of changes, this is due to the project's current focus on upgrading the core Ubuntu base system. Users can expect continued prioritization of broader platform improvements in forthcoming releases.
Highlighting this update, Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support has been enhanced to provide out-of-the-box compatibility with a wider range of mobile carriers. Additionally, Waydroid, the Android emulation layer, has been updated to version 1.5.1, bringing initial support for future official Android 13 images, along with additional stability fixes.
With this release, emoji rendering has also been improved. UBports has replaced the Emoji One font with Noto Color Emoji, allowing for better support of recently introduced emoji characters. Rounding out the release, users benefit from general security patches and bug fixes sourced from both the upstream Ubuntu base and the UBports project.
