postmarketOS 25.06 adds systemd, GNOME 48, Plasma Mobile 6.3.5, Thunderbird mobile, & more

postmarketOS 25.06 has been released, marking the latest upgrade for this Linux-based mobile operating system. This version introduces systemd, making it available in postmarketOS for the first time, a notable change for those tracking Linux mobile development. Alongside core improvements, the distribution now builds on Alpine Linux 3.22, providing a refreshed base.

Several major user interfaces have received upgrades. GNOME and GNOME Shell Mobile 48 are now included, bringing dynamic triple buffering, improved font support, notification stacking, and window and input enhancements. In parallel, KDE Plasma Mobile 6.3.5 introduces updates to the task switcher, window placement, action drawer, quick settings, the status bar, and volume controls. Users also benefit from more reliable manual screen rotation, a new Wi-Fi traffic monitor, and fixes to lockscreen and dual-SIM handling.

Following these UI updates, alternative mobile environments Phosh 0.47.0 and Sxmo 1.17.1 are present for broader device support. This release debuts a redesigned installer user interface. Users will also find mobile-config-thunderbird, enabling a mobile-friendly Thunderbird app, and mobile-config-firefox with new UI fixes and per-site user-agent spoofing for improved site compatibility. The OpenSSH client is no longer installed by default, but is still available. Additional updates include new wallpapers, initial camera support for more devices, as well as other enhancements and bug fixes.
