Firewall distribution IPFire now ships with native support for the WireGuard VPN protocol

IPFire 2.29 Core Update 195 introduces major advancements with the addition of WireGuard VPN protocol support. Users can now configure and manage WireGuard tunnels through a fully integrated web interface, elevating both ease of use and performance. The new implementation supports multiple peers, each with individual configuration settings, and enables administrators to display QR codes for quick mobile client setup or export full configuration files when needed.

IPFire provides a connection importer designed to enhance interoperability with other vendors and VPN services. The WireGuard functionality extends to support the Intrusion Prevention System and Connection Tracking modules, helping to ensure that existing security and monitoring workflows are maintained. Users can run WireGuard alongside current VPN solutions, further increasing deployment flexibility for mixed or transitional environments.

In addition to these headline features, IPFire 2.29 Core Update 195 brings a range of further enhancements and bug fixes, detailed in the project’s release notes.
