Shotcut 25.05 adds Alpha Strobe video filter, Freeze Frame tool integration, and more

Shotcut 25.05 introduces several workflow and creative features for users of this open source video editor. The new Alpha Strobe video filter offers fresh creative options for video effects. Building on timeline usability, the Freeze Frame tool is now directly integrated, enabling users to capture stills with a single click.

While these editing features improve daily workflows, the File menu now includes a Rerun Filter Analysis command to streamline filter operations. Users can also adjust the track header width in the timeline, making it easier to manage larger projects, and the playlist now displays an item count for quicker media organization. The “File New” submenu brings simplified access to both new projects and video generators. Editors also gain an “Add Generator” button in the timeline toolbar, making generator content more accessible.

For those working with higher resolutions or external monitors, this version adds a 1080p preview scaling option in the settings, as well as new DeckLink Gamma modes for SDR and HLG HDR under player settings. Although full High Dynamic Range (HDR) video support remains under development, this release enables HLG color transfer and gamma settings in the GPU Effects panel, marking ongoing progress in HDR workflows. Additional updates include updated key dependencies, as well as other enhancements and bug fixes.
