Owncast 0.2.2 released with initial translation support, updated codecs, and more

The Owncast team has released version 0.2.2 of the software, delivering several notable updates for users and contributors. For the first time, the web interface includes initial translation support, enabling the groundwork for multilingual accessibility. Although current translations are limited, since the team needs to go through the web code and mark up all the strings so they can be translated, contributors are encouraged to help expand this feature.

The update also expands hardware compatibility, with support for the latest VA-API implementation now available in modern versions of FFmpeg. This means users relying on VA-API are no longer restricted to older FFmpeg releases. Additionally, Intel Quick Sync joins the list of supported hardware accelerated codecs, offering more efficient streaming options for broadcasters utilizing Intel hardware.

Released on the 5th anniversary of Owncast’s launch, version 0.2.2 is complemented by several minor enhancements and key bug fixes. The update arrives about four months after the previous major version, underscoring the steady development of this open source live video streaming software.
