Thunderbird updates Android app and plans to release an iOS version by the end of the year

The Thunderbird team has announced updates for its Android email client, which is set to replace K-9 Mail imminently. A key focus is on enhancing the account drawer experience, allowing users to navigate between accounts more efficiently. Additionally, the update improves notifications and error states to ensure important emails are not missed, with further updates to be shared in the near future.

Some K-9 Mail users have encountered an “App Blocked” error when logging into certain Gmail accounts. This issue arises from Google's new verification process and additional requirements for K-9 Mail. The Thunderbird team is addressing this, and users can switch to Thunderbird for Android to bypass the problem temporarily.

Moreover, the Thunderbird team is developing an iOS version of the app. Basic architectural decisions are underway, with plans to release a bare-bones repository on GitHub soon. An alpha version is expected to be available on TestFlight by the end of the year.

i think it's a bit misleading to put "release an iOS version by the end of the year" in the title when it's only an alpha on Testflight that's planned for the end of the year...

On Thunderbird's blog, it reads "We’re going to be focusing on a basic display of email messages, and then expanding to triage actions. Sending basic emails is also on our list." So yes, don't expect Thunderbird iOS to be as useful as on Android at least of the few coming years!
