Ente has finally released the v1 of its end-to-end encrypted photo/video cloud storage app

Ente has officially launched version 1 of its photo app, Ente Photos, following over 40,000 commits over 5 years. This release emphasizes security with end-to-end encryption and reliability by storing encrypted data in three separate clouds, in three different locations, including one in an underground fallout shelter. The app introduces on-device search capabilities for people and objects in photos, eliminating the need for network connectivity. The update also features the ability to automatically highlight past special moments and important people, with a widget option to relive these memories directly from the home screen.

The new version includes a redesigned icon, featuring a little green heart, with an option to revert to the original icon via an icon switcher. Alongside these features, the release addresses various enhancements and bug fixes to improve user experience. Looking ahead, Ente is focusing on enhancing video streaming, introducing creative gallery layouts, developing a local-first version that doesn't require an account, and creating a private feed for sharing memories within close circles.

I am alreday all in with about 100k photos. But I am still missing nested folders! I hope they will implement that as soon as possible. I think the community is interested in an early implementation of this feature.

Please let me know if the following issues are fixed:

  • Had some very slow uploads, and yes, I do demand instant caching unfortunately
  • Machine learning on faces is fair/good, but not "great"
  • Desktop apps don't zoom in/out
  • No month/year page sliding feature like on Google Photos
  • Editing images on desktop or web (no issue on mobile) forces you to save a new copy of an image instead of direct edit, throwing the image to the top/recents instead of in the past. I want to edit a picture and overwrite it, always, NEVER a new copy.
