EA open sources four Command & Conquer games & boosts modding with Steam Workshop support

Electronic Arts (EA) has released the source code for four Command & Conquer titles under the open-source GPL license. The titles include Command & Conquer (Tiberian Dawn), Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Command & Conquer: Renegade, and Command & Conquer: Generals. The source code for these games is now available on EA's GitHub page. While the games' assets and cinematics remain proprietary, the open sourcing of the code is expected to aid modders and the game restoration community in maintaining the playability of these classic titles.

Additionally, EA is enhancing modding capabilities by adding Steam Workshop support to more recent entries in the real-time strategy franchise. This includes a modding support pack featuring assets from series titles on the SAGE engine, such as Command & Conquer Red Alert 3. This move could rejuvenate interest in a genre that has seen a decline in popularity, potentially attracting new players to the franchise. The release marks a significant step for video game preservation and reflects EA's positive engagement with a cherished game series.

This is incredible news for the Command & Conquer community! Open-sourcing these classic games is a huge win for modders and fans who have kept the series alive for decades. Steam Workshop support will make it even easier to create and share mods—can't wait to see what the community comes up with! Big respect to EA for making this move.

At least they didn't pull a WB and patent their old games until 20 years after posting this comment...
