Grafana Loki 3.4 brings Thanos support, sizing guidance, and Promtail merged into Alloy

Grafana has announced the release of Loki version 3.4, its log aggregation system designed for storing and querying logs from various applications and infrastructure. This update introduces several enhancements, including standardizing Loki’s object storage to assist in right-sizing instances and improving the ingestion of out-of-order logs. Notably, Promtail has been officially merged into Grafana Alloy, aligning with Grafana's goal of providing a unified telemetry collector.

Loki 3.4 now supports the Thanos Object Storage Client, which aims to streamline storage configuration across Grafana’s open-source software databases. The update also reintroduces the sizing guidance page, offering users insights into the necessary CPU and memory for running Loki in microservices mode. Additional enhancements include expanded support for out-of-order logs, improved structured metadata, and enhanced Loki Helm charts, allowing users to derive more value from their logs efficiently.

Grafana Loki is a horizontally-scalable, highly-available log aggregation system inspired by Prometheus. It focuses on cost-effectiveness and ease of operation by not indexing log contents, but instead using a set of labels for each log stream. Rated 5, it integrates seamlessly with Grafana. Key alternatives include Graylog, Datadog, and Kibana.
