Ebook manager Calibre 8.16 adds more AI features, LM Studio integration, and bug fixes
Calibre 8.16 is now available as the latest version of this free, open source, and cross-platform ebook management software. This release marks a significant update for users seeking advanced AI features. The headline new capability allows users to engage with artificial intelligence directly about books in their Calibre library. By right-clicking the “View” button, readers can select “Discuss selected book(s) with AI” to ask questions and gain deeper insights into any title.
Building on these AI enhancements, users can now request book recommendations with similar titles by right-clicking a book and using the “Similar books” menu. This workflow lets readers explore suggestions powered by AI, streamlining the process of selecting their next title. The update also brings technical improvements aimed at local processing: Calibre 8.16 adds a backend for LM Studio, enabling the use of AI models like Llama, Gemma, DeepSeek, and Qwen locally, which may appeal to users preferring other AI models.
Alongside these feature updates, the release resolves nine reported bugs. These fixes collectively improve the software’s overall stability and usability for the entire user community.

Disgusting. This AI hype must die before ruining more programs.
Oh great... Another app that DOES NOT NEED AI getting AI shoved into it :(
Hopefully the Clbre fork is maintained well because this update has ruined the app for me.
Exactly. It should not be a core feature. I could understand if the team wanted to release it as a official plugin (opt-in) but there's no reason to add bloat to this otherwise lovely open source tool.
