Tails 7.2 brings Tor Browser 15.0, Linux 6.12 LTS kernel, privacy upgrades, and more

Tails 7.2 is now available, offering several privacy-focused improvements in this portable operating system designed to protect users from surveillance and censorship. This release updates Tor Browser to version 15.0.1, which builds on the Firefox 140 base. Users who juggle many tabs will benefit from new features like vertical tabs, tab grouping, and a redesigned address bar with enhanced search options, making browsing more organized and efficient.

Alongside the browser enhancements, Tails 7.2 incorporates the Linux 6.12.57 LTS kernel, offering up-to-date security fixes and hardware compatibility. The bundled Thunderbird email client has also been updated to version 140.4.0. Following these core updates, Tails improves its privacy posture by disabling all telemetry connections that Thunderbird previously made to Mozilla, thereby minimizing the risk of unintentional data leaks.

For advanced users, the update changes how root access is managed. The Root Console has been removed. Now, administrative sessions require manual invocation by running the sudo -i command in the terminal. This aims to streamline access for power users while maintaining security.
