OpenAI launches its AI video creation app Sora on Android in select countries

OpenAI has launched its AI video generation app, Sora, on Android, expanding the platform's reach beyond the web and iOS devices. The app is now available on the Google Play Store in the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. This rollout broadens Sora's potential user base, granting access to some of the largest Android markets globally.

Following a strong debut on iOS in September, Sora quickly amassed over 1 million downloads in its first week and climbed to the top of the App Store charts. With the Android release, OpenAI aims to build on this momentum and attract more users interested in short-form AI video creation.

In terms of functionality, Sora presents a TikTok-like video feed showcasing AI-generated clips. It also introduces a “cameo” feature, which enables users to create personalized videos featuring themselves or their friends. These tools cater to content creators looking for AI-driven options in the competitive short-form video ecosystem.

Alongside the platform expansion, Sora has recently been scrutinized for its handling of deepfakes and copyright protections. After facing public criticism, OpenAI revised its opt-out policy for rights holders to address these concerns.
